What is jaundice?

Jaundice is not a disease. Jaundice means inflammation of the liver or hepatitis. It is just a sign or symptom of the disease. There are many misconceptions about the diet of the patient in case of jaundice, which has no basis.

It is often seen that in the case of jaundice (a common problem) caused by the breakdown of leukocytes, the disease is cured within a certain period of time.

What is jaundice?

In this regard, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Associate Professor of Gastroenterology. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said, ‘Jaundice’ is an English word though. Yet it has become attached to the present Bengali word.

By jaundice we mean yellowing of the eyes due to any complication of the liver, yellowing of the urine, loss of appetite, yellowing of the mouth and in some cases yellowing of the skin.

We also call it a symptom of jaundice. However, jaundice does not mean that the liver is damaged or affected in any way.

What are the common causes of jaundice?

In response to this question, Dr. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said, we can divide the causes of jaundice into two parts.

A viral cause, and a virus outside. Viral causes have been scientifically named A, B, C, D, E in this way.

External causes of the virus may be due to side effects of the drug, in some cases due to gallstones or may be due to tumors or cancer.

We usually call those under the age of 40 viral jaundice. And if it is more than 40, we suspect that it is the cause of the virus.

In this regard, Dr. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said that usually if any germ enters the body, it is caused by virus.

In our country, Hepatitis A and Hepatitis E viruses are usually spread through food and water. Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C are spread by blood or swine flu.

He said that the first symptoms he showed were loss of appetite, excessive weakness followed by yellowing of his eyes and urine. At the same time, nausea or vomiting may occur in some people. There are also some differences in defecation in some cases. These are mainly symptoms of viral jaundice.

Outside of the virus, the symptoms of jaundice are itching, fever, and in some cases, liver problems can make things worse.

What tests are done to understand jaundice?

Dr. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said, first we see the patient's symptoms and do some tests.

For example: what is the level of bilirubin in the blood, SGPT or AltPep, along with an ultrasonography test. I also test for viruses considering my age.

Does jaundice have anything to do with extra burning in the chest?

Dr. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said that jaundice has nothing to do with it. This can be due to a number of reasons, firstly, those who have gastric problems, may be due to the quality of the food (excess oil, fat, salty foods) or if there is pressure in the stomach immediately after the meal.

All you have to do is change your diet. For example: eat less and do not drink too much water while eating. Do not lie down after eating.

What is the treatment for jaundice?

The specialist doctor said. Md. Masudur Rahman Khan said that in order to cure jaundice, one needs to take necessary rest and nutritious food.

Rest is the most important thing here, because his liver is affected. And eat home-made normal nutritious liquid food. This is the main treatment for jaundice.

Because we say, usually jaundice will get better on its own after a while. Along with this some medicine can be taken on the advice of the doctor.
